General Rules of Chess
-Each piece has its own unique movement pattern
-You cannot move through other pieces, except for knights
-To capture, move your piece into a square occupied by an opponent's piece.
-Captured pieces are removed from the board.
Movement and Captures
-The goal is to "checkmate" your opponent's king. (Put it under attack with no way to escape
-White always moves first
-Players alternate moves, one piece per turn. (Two pieces in one special case)

Pawns are considered the heart of chess.
-They can move one space forward, or two for their first move.
-They attack diagonally
- If they reach the other end, they can turn into any piece

-Moves horizontally or vertically must move in a row or column.
-May move as many or as few in one direction.
Rook Movement
-Moves diagonally on its color.
-Bishops may not move off of the color they start on.
Bishop Movement

-Often the hardest to remember! It can move over other pieces.
-The movement is always "L" shaped.
-Must follow a rule of 2x1 or 1x2
-Move 2 in one direction, must move one a different direction.
-Move 1 in one direction, must move two in a different direction.
Knight movement

-May move in any direction, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
-Often considered the strongest piece.
Queen Movement
-May only move in one space in any direction.
-Cannot move to where an enemy piece could move on the next turn.
-May not stay in a spot where it can be taken
King Movement
