Romans 2-3: Mr. Beavers Responds to Thine Questions

By C. Beavers

2

Your Question #1

Verse 9-10 of Romans 2 say that there will be tribulation and distress for those who do bad and glory, honor, and peace for those who do good. Does that mean that the trials we face is because we've done something bad, and everytime we do something good we get peace?

3

Drag and Drop

Remember the context of the passage. Who is Paul talking to? You and me?

No, not
. He's writing to us
. He was writing to the Romans church directly.

Mr. Beavers thinks that Paul is warning the Roman church to not be so
.

But to your question directly,
bad things happen to us Christians today because we have done something wrong. We reap what we sow.

But the book of Ecclesiastes and other places are clear: Sometimes bad thing just happen. It's not what you've done that's caused it. It's out of your control. God allowed it to happen, though, to give you an opportunity to

Your Question #2

I don't really understand about how judging relates to the Church, is it like the Church people are judging others or something else?

5

Drag and Drop

Mr. Beavers thinks that this is
about people judging others. Mr. Beavers thinks the
tells us that the Gentiles and Jews of the Roman church were judging each other.

Jews were thinking that they were superior to the Gentiles because the Jews had been given the
.

Gentiles were thinking that they are superior because they had
like the Jews had.

It does not seem to Mr. Beavers like the Roman churches were totally

Your Question #3

When Paul was talking about how if you are outwardly a Jew it doesn't matter but if you are inwardly a Jew meaning like your heart is following God, did he mean like if you are inwardly following God you are chosen just like the Jewish people or am I taking this wrong?

7

Drag and Drop

The idea of being "chosen" is very
. Can you please wait for Mr. Beavers's
tomorrow? Pretty please and thank you!

Your Questions #4 and #5

Why were the people trying to argue that God’s wrath was unjust?

and

I didn't really understand Chapter 3 verse 5, which says "But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us?" Was this just one of their arguments to validate their wrongdoings?

9

Drag and Drop

It is not clear. Mr. Beavers thinks that maybe Paul was
that the Roman churches had.

But the topic of God being "unjust" might just be
that Paul is using to make his point.

Paul is definitely arguing that God is
unjust.

And he says "I am using a human argument"...meaning he rejects the argument because God's point of view is
than ours.

Regardless, the point here is even though our sin brought about the work of Jesus dying for our sins, that does NOT mean that we should still
in order to bring about more acts of God's grace.

Your Question #6

Is God going against what he said in the old testament about favoring the Jews?

11

Drag and Drop

Mr. Beavers
that God ever goes against what He says or promises.

Yes, God favored the
in the Old Testament.

But we know from studying the Old Testament that the Israelites
God time and time again.

The New Testament is telling us that now God is allowing
Jews and Gentiles into the family of God.

So, no, this is not going against anything. Instead,t's the
of what God promised all along, since Abraham.

12

Your Question #7

Why did the Jews were not following the rules even though they had it even before? How can they be so same or even worse than Gentiles?

13

Drag and Drop

Great question. Mr. Beavers does not think that anyone has the perfect answer for this. Except to say that the
of humans is that corrupt.

Remember too that even though the Israelites
God in the Old Testament, the Pharisees wanted to follow the Law of Moses so much that they added
!!!

In the time of Jesus, then, there was a
of Jews that had forsaken the Law and Jews that were adding too much of a burden to the people in trying to follow the Law.

There has to be a healthy balance. And that is simply giving your heart to God and allowing the

Your Question #9

I noticed at one point (i'm not sure when) he talked about how Jews have an advantage (the have the law given to them.) But, then later it said they have a disadvantage. What was that about?

17

Drag and Drop

Mr. Beavers thinks that you
.

The advantage that the Jews had was that they could know directly what God's word was because He
to them.

Gentiles only had
(what Paul talked about in chapter 1, about being able to look at nature and figure out what God must be like).

The Gentiles were at a disadvantage in knowing God because they had
His word directly until

Your Question #10

Paul said that people have a heart that can determine the right and wrong even if they didn't get the law, is he talking about moral law or herd instinct or both?

19

Drag and Drop

Don't confuse the CS Lewis arguments from
and what Paul is arguing in
. The "herd instinct" was dealt with in Mere Christianity
. People of Paul's day had no concept of the
evolution that Lewis was referring to.

Your Question #11

Im just not as familiar with the topic of Jews and Gentiles, and how Gentiles are expected to know the law and follow it still

21

Drag and Drop

The Gentiles are
to follow the Law of Moses. That was for the people of Israel only. It was written for them to help them be
, or set apart, from the Gentiles.

Yes, there are
in the Law of Moses. Ten Commandments would be one example. The Gentiles should know those just because of the morality written onto the
of every human.

But the Gentiles were not supposed to know or follow the
laws, etc... simply because it was not FOR the Gentiles.

Your Questions #12 and #13 and #14

Is it possible to be saved even if they are doing bad deeds, such as murder?

and

Romans 2 says that God shows no favoritism and everyone who have faith in Him and repent will be forgiven. So even if someone killed and repent they will be forgiven?

and

It says God will repay each person according to what they did, but if you don’t believe, don’t you go to hell whether you lived a clean life or if you were a murderer?

26

Your Question #16

How can we treat each other with equal respect? Is it even possible to completely treat others the same?

27

Drag and Drop

Mr. Beavers thinks that it is
to treat
with respect and dignity.

Not only because many Christians throughout history have done it, but also because Mr. Beavers does not think that God would
if it were i
for us to do it.

28

Your Question #17

I understand that we are all equal. The Gentiles aren't less; in fact, the Jews should be accused of that because they were given the law. So then, how does that work for us? Because we have the Bible. Are we like the Jews or the Gentiles?

29

Drag and Drop

This is a very interesting way to put it. Mr. Beavers is not sure that he's every thought of it this way.

Mr. Beavers's initial reaction is that we would be more like the
of that day, since they had the
Testament revealed to them and we have the
readily available to us.

Mr. Beavers thinks that, in context, what we can take away from the Roman churches of Paul's day is:

, we need to
the barriers that divide us and emphasis that which unites us, namely Christ Jesus.

33

Drag and Drop

This is a pretty big question. Pretty deep.

Mr. Beavers does not have all the answers, as usual.

Here is one answer. It is from Romans 1:

21 For although they
God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became
and their foolish
. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became

Your Question #21

I liked what it says about hearers vs. doers - but shouldn't we be both? Some people were doers but their hearts were impure - so its more than just hearing and doing right?

37
