Point of view

    • Point of view is the lens through which the reader sees the events of a story through the author’s structure and craft in the novel.

    • First Person:

      • told from the viewpoint of one of the characters using the first person pronouns (I, me, my, myself, we, ours, etc).

      • In a first person point of view the narrator is a character in the story telling it from their perspective.

    • Second Person:

      • uses the pronoun “you” to address the reader. This narrative voice implies that the reader is either the protagonist or a character in the story and the events are happening to them.

      • This is usually used in speeches where the speaker is addressing the audience.

    • Third Person:

      • The narrator exists outside the events of the story, and relates the actions of the characters by referring to their names or by the third-person pronouns he, she, or they.

      • There are 3 types of third person point of views: Third Person Limited, Third Person Omniscient, and Third Person Objective.

        • Third Person Limited:  the narrator is an outside observer that focuses on the thoughts and feelings of only one character.

        • Third Person Omniscient- the narrator is an outside observer who can tell us the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in a story.

        • Third Person Objective: the narrator reports the facts of a narrator as a seemingly neutral and impersonal outside observer.

Why Is It Important:

  • When an author writes a story, they make a deliberate choice in which point of view (perspective) to use to tell that story.  The point of view is important because it significantly influences the plot.  It determines how much information will be revealed to the reader.

  • Perspective in Writing:

    • After reading a text, you may feel like you know exactly where a writer "stands" on a particular topic. That probably means that the writer revealed a personal perspective in his or her work.

  • Identifying Perspective:

    • Most writers do not directly state their perspectives. As a reader, you have to use the following steps to infer, or make logical guesses about, the perspective:

      • Identify the main idea or theme.

      • Look for clues.

      • Consider the writer's life.

      • Describe the perspective.

  • Clues to Perspective:

    • Many different elements can be clues to an author's perspective. The following elements are clues found in writing:

      • Word choice

      • Selection of information

      • Direct statements

      • Portrayal of people

      • Tone
