Part 1: Solar System Connections to Careers
1. Exploring Careers in Astronomy
Understanding the objects in our solar system can inspire people to become astronomers or
astrophysicists. For example, studying the composition and behavior of planets and moons can help
scientists research exoplanets (planets outside our solar system). Others may design satellites that
monitor Earth’s climate.
3
Fill in the Blank
a) What is one job someone might have if they study planets and moons? ________
4
Fill in the Blank
b) Why might satellites be important for Earth? ________
5
2. Space Missions and Engineering
Space engineers design and build spacecraft that explore planets like Mars and Jupiter. These
spacecraft must survive extreme temperatures, high radiation, and long trips through space. Engineers
use their knowledge of planetary environments and materials to solve these challenges.
6
Fill in the Blank
a) What are two challenges spacecraft face in space? ________
7

b) If you were an engineer, which planet would you want to design a spacecraft for? Why? ________
8
3. Environmental Awareness Through Planetary Comparisons
Venus has a strong greenhouse effect that traps heat, while Mars has a thin atmosphere that makes it
very cold. By comparing Earth with these planets, scientists understand how important it is to protect
our environment. This research can lead to careers in environmental science or sustainability
9
Fill in the Blank
a) What can we learn from Venus about climate? ________
10

b) How can studying other planets help us protect Earth? ________

Reflection
1. Which of the three careers (astronomer, engineer, environmental scientist) sounds most interesting
to you? Why?
12

2. If you could explore one object in the solar system (planet, moon, asteroid, etc.), what would it be
and what would you want to discover?
