Since we live in Virginia, we must be able to identify Virginia!
Virginia's weird shape helps it stand out, but let's try seeing if we can find Virginia on a larger map!

Virginia is the was among the original 13 states, but was home to the first permanent English settlement in North America.
Virginia, today, remains one of, if not THE, most historically rich state - maybe the most important too!

Here in Virginia, we must know a few symbols. Like our state capital!
A state capital is usually shown with a star, like so:

Richmond is our state capital, so it gets a star on a map!
Our capital city of Richmond is located along the James River.

The star isn't just for state capitals, but for national capitals! Richmond is our state capital, but the United States capital is:
WASHINGTON, D.C.

Right here is Virginia, our state.
If we use this compass, we see that Washington D.C. is NORTH of Virginia!

The United States Capitol building serves as a symbol of the United States and its democracy. Though it has been targeted in the past, like in the War of 1812 and Civil War, it still persists today and can be visited by anybody!

The Virginia Capitol building serves as a symbol for Virginia's lawmakers and was built in 1788 - it's still used today AND is free to visit!
(And it was designed by Thomas Jefferson!)

A Look at Virginia State Stymbols:

First used as a symbol in 1782, it wasn't until 2024 that it was officially the United States National Bird.
Bald Eagles are only native to North America!
Bald Eagle
Made in 1753 (272yrs ago!), it is a symbol used to represent liberty and freedom of all peoples.
Not only a national symbol, but also used as a symbol for the freeing of slaves!
Liberty Bell
A gift from France in 1886, the Statue of Liberty stands 305ft tall in total.
Made shortly after the US Civil War, it represents the idea of liberty for all.

First built on July 4, 1848, it is a way to remember our country's first president - George Washington.
It's surrounded by 50 flags for the 50 states!
Tallest structure in D.C.!
Washington Memorial
Finished in 1922, it was built to honor our 16th president - Abraham Lincoln.
It has 36 columns for the 36 states he unified after the US Civil War, Inside there is a large statue of Lincoln.

Finished April 13, 1943, this was built to honor our 3rd president - Thomas Jefferson.
The Jefferson Memorial was dedicated exactly 200yrs after Jefferson's birthday!

The American flag has a lot of meaning built into it, like:
Stars: One to represent each state (50)
Stripes: One to represent each original state (13)
Colors: Red, White, & Blue
