TAUHID REFLECTION

Surah Ikhlas is a Makkan surah, which means it was revealed when the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) was living in Makkah. At the time, the disbelievers in Makkah would mock the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) by pointing to their idols and saying: ‘These are our gods, where is yours?’

They thought that their gods were superior as they could be seen and made fun of the fact that Allah could not be seen and therefore he could not exist. 

In reply to this, Allah revealed Surah Ikhlas which begins with the word “Qul.” Allah is telling the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) to reply to their mockery and questions. This surah defends the honour of Allah and sums up the characteristics and uniqueness of Allah in just 4 ayahs. The way that the surah is structured grammatically and linguistically is beautifully succinct. 

Surah Ikhlas adalah surah Makkiyah, yang berarti surah ini diturunkan ketika Nabi Muhammad (s.a.w) masih tinggal di Makkah. Pada masa itu, orang-orang kafir Makkah sering mengejek Nabi Muhammad (s.a.w) dengan menunjuk pada berhala-berhala mereka dan berkata: “Ini adalah tuhan-tuhan kami, di mana tuhanmu?” Mereka menganggap tuhan-tuhan mereka lebih hebat karena dapat dilihat, dan mereka mengejek kenyataan bahwa Allah tidak dapat dilihat sehingga mereka mengira Allah tidak ada.

Sebagai jawaban atas ejekan ini, Allah menurunkan Surah Ikhlas yang dimulai dengan kata “Qul.” Allah memerintahkan Nabi Muhammad (s.a.w) untuk menjawab ejekan dan pertanyaan mereka. Surah ini membela kemuliaan Allah dan merangkum sifat-sifat serta keunikan Allah hanya dalam 4 ayat. Struktur surah ini, baik secara tata bahasa maupun gaya bahasanya, sangat ringkas namun indah.
