The 1-1-1 Rule

  1. One syllable (or a final stressed syllable if the word has more than one).

  2. One vowel right before the final consonant.

  3. Ends in one consonant (not w, x, or y).

If all three are true, double the final consonant before adding -ed (and also before -ing).

  • Two vowels before the consonant: need → needed, boil → boiled

  • Unstressed final syllable: listen → listened, travel → traveled (in US spelling; British often doubles if stress is on the second syllable: travelling).

  • Ends in w, x, or y: snow → snowed, play → played, fix → fixed.
