Jefferson as a Founding Father

Thomas Jefferson was a key leader in American history and the third President of the United States. He is best known for writing the Declaration of Independence, which told the world that the American colonies wanted to be free from British rule.

The Declaration of Independence

This document is Jefferson's most well-known accomplishment. It states that the colonies will no longer be under British control and that "all men are created equal" and have "certain unalienable rights" being:
LIFE, LIBERTY, & THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

Jefferson believed in freedom and equality for all people, and he worked to make the country stronger. As president, he made the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. Jefferson’s ideas helped shape the nation and make it a place where people could have more opportunities to be free.
