About the Book

This story is based on real events and follows two young people in Sudan.

  • In 1985, Salva, an eleven-year-old boy, is forced to run for his life when war reaches his village. Separated from his family, he begins an incredible journey across Africa—facing hunger, wild animals, and danger—before eventually finding safety.

  • In 2008, Nya, a young girl, spends hours every single day walking to fetch water for her family. The water is often dirty, but it is the only source they have.

At first their stories seem far apart in time and place, but eventually they come together in a powerful way that shows the strength of ordinary people to survive and bring hope to others.
