Assigned Reading

d'Aulares' Book of Greek Myths

d'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths Hephaestus was the son of Zeus and Hera, and he was the god of smiths and fire. Although he had trouble walking, he was inventive and worked hard with his helpers the Cyclopes inside of volcanoes to fashion weapons and make jewels. His wife Aphrodite was especially fond of the jewels. Aphrodite was the beautiful goddess of love, and when she arrived in Olympus, she was immediately granted one of the golden thrones. Aphrodite's son Eros liked to shoot arrows of love into his victims so that they immediately fell in love with the first person they saw. Aphrodite loved Ares and would rather not be married to dirty Hephaestus. Ares was the god of war, and although he was handsome, he was unkind. His partner was Eris, who was the spirit of strife. She used a golden apple to cause discord between friends and enemies. Once there was discord, Ares would throw himself into the middle of the battle to shed as much blood as possible. Ares' sister Athena did not like him. She was the goddess of wisdom who had sprung from her father Zeus's head. Athena was best known for her competition with her pupil Arachne, a skillful but vain weaver whom Arachne turned into a spider. Poseidon, the lord of the sea, used his trident to split open the earth and cause giant waves to crash in the sea when he was angry.
