What is HELPING VERB?

When do we use them?

EXAMPLE:

• We are helping our parents during cleaning spree.

• * "ARE" is what we called the HELPING VERB.

• * "HELPING" is the MAIN/ACTION VERB of the sentence (HELP is the Base form of the verb)

Negative Form of PRESENT VERB TO BE

If we want to add 'not'

• I (be + not) = I am not

• She/ He/ It or any singular subject (be + not) = She / He/ It + is not [isn't]

• You / We / They or any plural subject (be + not) = You / We / They + are not [aren't]

EXAMPLE:

• Swee Lin is waiting for her friends to arrive.

• Swee Lin is not waiting for her friends to arrive.

• * REMEMBER... Put the NOT after the verb to be.

So... when do we use the VERB TO BE [WAS & WERE]

• these are for PAST TENSE

For example...

• This is to show an action that is happening in the PAST.

We use the PRESENT SIMPLE verb to be in these kind of sentences

• in present continuous : She is typing the message.

• in be + going to : She is going to type the message later

• to talk about names, profession, nationalities, feelings, and ages : He is Thai / My sister is six / My mom is a teacher / I am Saleh

What about 'is being'? When do we use that???

• The verb to be "is, are, am + being" is something that we use to show the action that is happening right at this moment.

• As such, it is used for present continuous and NOT NOT NOT PRESENT SIMPLE.

For example...

• My friends are being unreasonable 

• OR

• I am being helpful.
