Front vs. Back

  • Anterior: (or Ventral): The front or belly side of the body.

  • Posterior: (or Dorsal): The back or rear side of the body.

  • Superior: (or Cranial): Toward the head or upper part of a structure.

  • Inferior: (or Caudal): Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure.

5

  • Lateral: Away from the midline of the body.

  • Medial: Toward the midline of the body

  • Proximal: Closer to the point of origin or the trunk of the body.

  • Distal: Further away from the point of origin or the trunk of the body.

7

  • Deep: (or Internal): Away from the body surface, or further into the body.

  • Superficial: (or External): Toward or on the body surface.

  • Supine: Lying on the back with the face or palm up.

  • Prone: Lying on the abdomen with the face or palm down.

9

Sagittal Plane:

  • Vertical plane that runs lengthwise through the body

2. Coronal Plane (Frontal Plane):

  • Vertical plane that divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections

3. Transverse Plane (Horizontal Plane):

  • Horizontal plane that divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) sections
