Dollar Diplomacy and Military Backing Dollar Diplomacy (early 1900s, especially under President William Howard Taft) was the U.S. policy of using economic power and investments to influence other countries, particularly in Latin America,Carribeans, and East Asia. The idea was that American banks and businesses would invest in foreign nations, creating stability and strengthening U.S. influence without direct conflict. However, when investments or U.S. interests were threatened, the United States often followed up with military strength (sending troops, occupying territories, or supporting certain governments). Example: In Nicaragua (1911–1912), the U.S. encouraged American bankers to loan money to the government (dollar diplomacy). When unrest broke out, the U.S. sent Marines to protect its interests and stabilize the government.
