Reading Bundle: Online Friends
14
Talking to friends online can be a lot of fun! Sharing your experiences, pictures, and jokes with those you like is awesome!
However, when it comes to online friends, there may be times when you should think before you share. After all, you cannot be sure what your friends will do with information or images after you share them.
15
Because the types of communication are different, how you connect with friends in person and how you connect with them online is different, too. Have you ever considered why that is the case?
In any case, ask yourself:
How well do you actually know all the people you connect with online?
16
Open Ended
Take a minute to share something fun that you might do with online friends.
17
Risky Online Relationships:
Knowing someone's username and the information they share online does not mean that you really know that individual well.
When it comes to online friends, you must be careful to interact with only those you know in person.
18
Please see the Reading Bundle of the Edio Lesson, page 4, to watch the video:
"Protect Yourself By Knowing Who You are Communicating With"
19
Make a Plan
The more you are online, the more likely it is that a stranger may try to contact you or send a message that makes you feel uncomfortable. However, you do not have to be afraid if this happens. You can plan what to do now so that you are ready if you ever experience unwanted contact.
Imagining how to solve a problem can help you feel more confident.
20
Open Ended
Mystery Friend Request:
You got a friend request from someone you do not know.
Write a few words stating what you would do.
21
Multiple Choice
An online friend sent you a message that made you feel uncomfortable.
What do you think is the best thing to do in this situation?
Respond to your friend's message with a hurtful comment to them.
Post something on social media about them that is mean.
Delete the message. Maybe write back to ask if they meant to hurt your feelings.
22
Multiple Choice
You got a message from a friend who you only know online, who suggests that you meet at the park near your home.
What should you do?
Send a message to your online friend that you meet at the pool instead.
Go to the park and meet your friend.
Tell your friend you won't be going. Then tell a trusted adult about the invitation.
23
3 Facts that may surprise you:

Most risky online behaviors are in response to requests that come from other kids.

Nice work! Remember to be careful when it comes to all your online relationships. Even people you know can show poor judgment and put you in danger, so beware! Online friendships can be positive things, but you need to think before you act. You must always evaluate the motivations of others when you interact with friends on the Internet.

Compose Your Final Draft
Your final draft is the best version of your writing. This writing should be done as carefully as possible. As you begin, make sure that you have your revised and edited paragraphs in front of you. You will want to refer to the revisions you have already made as you write your final draft today.
