Le verbe être
l'origine | la profession | la description |
|---|---|---|
Rachid est sénégalais. | Tu es docteur. | Nous sommes méchants. |
Je suis française. | Emma et toi, vous êtes étudiants. | Elle est gentille. |
Paul et Sandrine sont du Québec. | Ils sont professeurs de français. | Il est patient. |
The verb être (to be) is one of the most verb used in French. Être (to be) is an irregular verb; its conjugation (set of forms for different subjects) does not follow a pattern. The form être is called the infinitive because it does not have a subject.

L'accord des Adjectifs
Adjective agreement
Adjectives are words that describe people, places, and things. They are often used with the verb être to point out the qualities of nouns or pronouns.
In French, most adjectives agree in number and gender with the nouns they modify.
To make many adjectives feminine, you add -e. If the adjective already ends with -e, you add nothing.
To make most adjectives plural, add -s.
Quelques exemples…
masculin | féminin | masculin pluriel | féminin pluriel | anglais |
|---|---|---|---|---|
patient | patiente | patients | patientes | patient |
optimiste | optimiste | optimistes | optimistes | optimistic |
Henri est élégant et agréable. | Carole est élégante et agréable. | - | - | Carole is elegant and pleasant. |
| Marc et David sont intelligents et sociables. | Anne et Claire sont intelligentes et sociables. | Marc and David are intelligent and sociable. | |
Bernard est un homme agréable et poli. | Bernard is a pleasant and polite man. | |||
| Ce sont des élèves brillants. | Ce sont des élèves brillantes. | They are brilliant students. |
42
Les adjectifs de nationalité
Adjectives like sénégalais that already end in -s, have the same masculine singular and plural forms.
To ask someone’s nationality or heritage, use Quelle est ta/votre nationalité? or Tu es/Vous êtes de quelle origine?
Note that the adjectives following nationalité and origine are feminine. This is because both nouns are feminine.
Quelques Exemples...
masculin singulier | masculin pluriel | féminin singulier | féminin pluriel | anglais |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Il est américain. | Ils sont américains. | Elle est américaine. | Elles sont américaines. | He/She is American. |
Il est français. | Ils sont français. | Elle est française. | Elles sont françaises. | He/She is French. |
sénégalais | sénégalais | sénégalaise | sénégalaises | Senegalese |
