Contractions with "à"

When "le" and "les" follow the preposition "à", the preposition contracts. Here are the contractions:

Adjective agreement

Adjectives have to agree in gender and number with what they are describing.

Usually, you add an "e" to an adjective describing something feminine, and an "s" to an adjective describing something plural.

When you use "C'est...

When you use, "C'est + adjectif", the adjective will be masculin.

Ex: C'est amusant.

You are being UNspecific when saying this. You are saying that in general, the thing (could be subject or class) is fun.

Subject pronouns

Subject pronouns (Je, Tu, Il, Elle, On, Nous, Vous, Ils, Elles) replace something. The pronoun has to agree in gender and number with what it is replacing.

"Il" and "Elle" mean He and She, but they also mean "It". If what you are replacing is a feminin noun, then you need "Elle" to say "It".

You need "Il" if your "It" is masculin.

Subject pronouns

The same is true for "Ils" and "Elles". If what you are replacing is feminine AND plural, you need "Elles".


If it is masculin AND plural, you need "Ils".
