  • A coordinate plane is like a map. It helps us find places using numbers.

  • Imagine two number lines that cross each other.

    • One horizontal line (x-axis)

    • One vertical line (y-axis)

  • The place where those axis cross is the origin (0,0)

What is a coordinate plane?

(quad)rants = 4 sections

  • The quadrants go in a counter-clockwise direction.

  • Start in top right, goes to top left, then bottom left and ends in bottom right.

What does a coordinate plane include?

5

media
  • To find a point on the plane, we use two numbers called coordinates.

  • The coordinates are written as (x, y).

  • The x number move right or left from the origin.

  • The y number move up or down from the origin.

  • You move the to the x-axis then y-axis and place a mark where those lines cross

How to locate and plot points?

Summary of Coordinate Planes

  • A coordinate plane is like a map that uses two number lines, x and y, to find places.

  • The plane is split into four sections called quadrants, numbered I to IV.

  • Coordinates (x, y) tell us how far to move right/left and up/down to find a point.
