Appositive Phrases or 'Interruptions'

Always stick to either a pair of commas or a pair of dashes to interrupt a sentence.


The letter carrier, Sam, is always cheerful.

The team won the game- it was their fifth of the season- and got a nice write up in the local paper.

FANBOYS
These must have COMPLETE sentences AFTER the fanboy to need a comma in front of the fanboy!


The water is warm and very salty.
The water is warm, but the saltiness was overwhelming.


CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS (them words)
These words almost always begin new sentences. They must have a period or semicolon in front and a comma behind them.

The water is warm; however, the saltiness is overwhelming.
The water is warm. However, the saltiness is overwhelming.
