RL.1.D
Using appropriate text, determine the theme(s) of a text and explain the relationship between the theme(s) and supporting evidence; summarize the text distinct from personal opinions.
On your paper, you will read through the theme statement then follow the instructions. Underline the verbs in your standard, then highlight the important terms. Fill these words out on the table at the bottom.

Synonyms
With your partner, find synonyms for each of the terms you listed in the table.
My favorite resource to use when I'm trying to break down words like this is a Thesaurus. In the search box, just click on the word "Thesaurus" and type in your word from the standard. It'll help find some new words for you!

One-Point Rubric
The one-point rubric on the previous slide is how I will determine if you are proficient in identifying the theme of a text.
Over the next two weeks, we will be working hard to understand what a theme is. Once you have finished with filling out your paper, stick it in the "References" tab of your binder.
You may then read your independent reading book.
