What Is a Syllable?

A syllable is a beat or part of a word.
Each syllable has one vowel sound.

Examples:

• cat → 1 syllable

• rabbit → 2 syllables (rab / bit)

• fantastic → 3 syllables (fan / tas / tic)

What Is a Closed Syllable?

A closed syllable ends with one or more consonants that “close in” the vowel.
The vowel says its short sound.

Examples:

• cat → vowel “a” is short and closed by “t.”

• bed → vowel “e” is short and closed by “d.”

• hop → vowel “o” is short and closed by “p.”

💡 Think: The door is closed, so the vowel says its short sound!

Open vs. Closed

An open syllable ends with a vowel that says its long sound.
A closed syllable ends with a consonant that makes the vowel short.
