• competition between powerful countries to build large empires by taking over weaker nations or colonies for resources

• Why might this be a cause of WWI?

• the strong pride and loyalty people feel toward their own country or ethnic group

• Empires (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, and Ottoman)

  • Slavs

  • Independence

  • Serbia

N is for Nationalism

• June 28, 1914

• Black Hand (Slavic National group)

  • Gavrilo Princip

• Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie

• Sarajevo

• Goal: weaken Austria-Hungary, start rebellion of independence for Slavs

• Result: WWI

The Spark that Ignited Europe

• Create one of two things:

  • Comic Strip depicting the MAIN Causes of WWI (10 boxes, 2 on each cause)

  • Political cartoon/poster that represents all MAIN causes as ONE coherent image

• Must be in color
