After the war

  • They wanted a Representative Democracy.

    • People choose representatives to vote for them in the government

  • The US is a Federal system

    • Two levels share the power. Federal and state

  • They wanted the government to get its power from the people

The Articles of Confederation

  • The first written setup of the government

  • The states had too much power

  • It lead to Shay's Rebellion

    • The farmers rebelled against the government and caused the courts to shut down

  • The states were not unified (different money and views)

  • The second written setup of the government



  • Changes to the constitution are called amendments



  • It established a stronger federal government

  • Makes sure that each branch has its own duties and responsibilities

    • Separation of power

  • It established checks and balances

    • A way that each branch of government can control the other 2 branches

  • The southern states did not want to sign the constitution unless they could count their slaves in the population.

    • Led to every 5 slaves counting as 3 free people

  • The big states and little states could not decide if they should all have the same number of representatives or if it should be based on population

    • The Great Compromise gave both. Population in the House of Reps. and equal amounts in the Senate

  • The south would not sign in the constitution if their rights were not included
