Assignment: Read chapters 16-17 of Detectives in Togas

Assigned Reading:

Detectives in Togas Soon, the boys sat together in their secret cave and listened to Mucius's story. Although it sounded peculiar, it made sense to believe that Rufus went to the house of Lukos and then fell into the Baths of Diana just as Mucius had.

Although the boys were convinced of Rufus's innocence, they did not know who would listen to their story. They decided to write a letter to be delivered to the Emperor, but then they began to doubt Mucius's credibility compared to that of Scribonus. As the boys conferred with one another, Caius popped out of a corner of the cave and told them that he wrote "Caius is a dumbbell" on the temple wall because he wanted to get even with Rufus. Caius explained that he pushed paint through the stolen tablet onto the temple wall so that the handwriting matched However, Julius proved that Caius was lying because if he had used that technique, the letters would have appeared backwards. Xantippus interrupted their meeting, and said that Rufus's mother and Rompus had come to see him and suggested that they may be in their cave. After hearing all the details of the boys' story, Xantippus suggested that the newspaper report the boys read was the important issue because the newspaper was printed before the fifth watch of the night when the policemen said they left their post. So the boys set out to speak to the Censor to find out which courier delivered the message for the newspaper.
