- We will learn how to use prepositions correctly by studying different examples.
- We will have fun practicing together as a group to master this skill.
- You will get to practice on your own to show what you've learned.
- Finally, we will review the key ideas from our lesson today.
3
Learning Objectives
- Identify prepositions in sentences and understand their function.
- Explain how prepositions show location, time, or direction.
- Use prepositions to build more detailed and interesting sentences.
4
What Are Prepositions?
• Prepositions are words that show direction, time, or location in a sentence.
• They connect a noun or pronoun to another word to show a relationship.
• Prepositions help answer questions like ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, or ‘How?’.
• For example: The cat is on the chair or near the window.
• Using them makes your writing and speaking clearer and more descriptive.
5
Let's Learn with an Example
Let's look at this sentence: 'The squirrel scampered up the tall oak tree.'
• First, picture the action in the sentence: a squirrel is moving quickly.
• Find the word that connects the action (scampered) to the location (tree).
• The word 'up' shows the direction the squirrel moved, answering "Where?".
• We can confirm this because 'up' starts a prepositional phrase.
• The phrase 'up the tall oak tree' adds more detail to the action.
• So, 'up' is the preposition, linking the verb 'scampered' to the noun 'tree'.
