Penal Substitution Theory

Penal = Penalty.
Substitution = Something else took its place.
Penal Substitution Theory = "Somebody had to serve the prison sentence so we applied the penalty to a substitute person. They were innocent, but they are going to serve the jail time on behalf of the guilty person"

Penal Substitution says that "Humanity sinned and the price of sin is death. God was angry at sin and hated it, so he had to punish somebody. He can't just "wipe it away". So the innocent Jesus steps in and says "I'll take the punishment that guilty-humanity should have paid!" Then God poured all of his wrath and anger on Jesus so that he didn't have to pour his anger on humanity. Thus the debt is paid and we are right with God."

18

19

Multiple Choice

How does our speaker feel about the following idea: "God can't just forgive sin because that would make him unjust. He must punish sin"

1

He says that is an incorrect view

2

He agrees with that idea

20

21

Multiple Choice

In the courtroom analogy, why can’t a human judge simply “forgive” a crime?

1

The Judge is a sinner and cannot forgive wrongs that people have done against him. Human sinners cannot forgive things that have been done against the,.

2

The judge himself wasn't wronged, so he can't wave away a crime that was done against somebody else because it is the grieving person's choice to forgive or not, and the jduge is there to get justice for another person.

3

The judge lacks the intelligence to judge cases as well as God can, so they are bound to make mistakes and judge incorrectly. For this reason a judge can't wave away a crime.

4

Nobody can ever wave away a crime. Crimes have to be punished.

22

Multiple Choice

In the courtroom analogy, why CAN the grieved party forgive a crime?

1

The grieved party can forgive a crime because it was done against them

2

The grieved party can't do that

3

The grieved party can forgive a crime because they are feeling bad for what they did.

23

Multiple Choice

What misunderstanding about “God's justice” does the speaker say is popular, but incorrect?

1

That justice and mercy are unrelated

2

That God must punish every sin because He is bound by a higher law

3

That only Jesus can forgive sins

4

That Old Testament justice differs from New Testament justice

24

Multiple Select

Why is it wrong to say that "God must punish every sin because He is bound by a higher law" (Select all that apply)

1

Judges actually are allowed to pardon and dismiss any crime for any reason whatsoever, so God can too.

2

God is the highest authority and He doesn't submit to some "law" that is above Him.

3

Sin is against God, and so if He chooses He can forgive it without needing to punish anybody.

4

This isn't wrong. God has to punish every sin because He indeed is bound by the law of justice thatis greater than Him.

25

Multiple Choice

According to the speaker (drawing on Aquinas), why could God forgive sins without violating justice?

1

Because God delegates judgment to angels

2

Because sin is primarily a debt owed to God, so he can forgive it

3

Because human courts allow judges to dismiss any case for any reason

4

Because forgiveness erases the reality of the offense

26

27

Multiple Choice

How does Matthew 18 (the parable of the king and the debtor) support the speaker’s point?

1

It shows debts are always collected with interest

2

It shows the offended party (the king) may freely forgive an immense debt

3

It shows servants must negotiate fair payment plans, which is what happens in the parable and is the reason why the debtor is forgiven

4

It shows forgiveness requires all payments to be repaid in full

God was angry at sin and hated it, so he had to punish somebody. He can't just "wipe it away". So the innocent Jesus steps in and says "I'll take the punishment that guilty-humanity should have paid!"
