Getting to Know Adverbs
- Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
- They tell us how, when, where, or why an action happens.
- For example, in the sentence, "She sings beautifully."
- The word "beautifully" is an adverb as it tells how she sings.
- Many adverbs are easy to find because they end with "-ly."

What is an Adverb?
• An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or even another adverb.
• They make your writing more exciting by adding important details.
• Adverbs help answer questions like how?, when?, where?, or to what extent?.
• For example, ‘slowly’ tells us how the turtle walked in the sentence.

Let's Learn with an Example
Let's look at this sentence: "The happy dog barked loudly yesterday."
• The main action, or verb, in the sentence is "barked."
• The word "loudly" is an adverb that describes how the dog barked.
• "Yesterday" is also an adverb because it tells when the dog barked.
• "Happy" is an adjective, not an adverb, because it describes the noun "dog."
• The adverbs "loudly" and "yesterday" both add more detail to the verb.
