Hawaii's Volcanoes The Hawaiian islands were formed by volcanic activity. Hawaii has shield volcanoes. Shield volcanoes are not always active. Two of the most active shield volcanoes in Hawaii are the Mauna Loa and the Mauna Kea. In an earlier lesson, you learned that the Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano in the United States.
25
Hawaii's Climate The mountains in Hawaii obstruct or block the air. This causes some areas in Hawaii to get more rain. It receives 25 to 30 inches of rain a year. Hawaii has a tropical climate. That means that temperatures stay near 80 degrees in the summer and winter.

Hawaii's Plants and Animals Many plant species are found in Hawaii. Coconut, papaya, and banana trees are found on the Big Island in Hawaii. Pineapples grow on plants close to the ground. Today, you will read Chapter 8 of Disaster Strikes. Using your copy or the digital one below, read the book on your own or listen to the book using the audio features. As you read, look for details that will help you answer the following questions:
What are Emma, Noah, and Alex running from?
What do you think happened to Alex?
31
32
Noah, Emma, and Alex have been through a volcanic eruption, falling into a sinkhole and being trapped in a cave. Now, they are faced with the threat of a mudslide. They are covered in volcanic ash. They cover their nose and mouth to keep from breathing in the particles, but it still leaves them with a gritty or sandy taste in their mouth and throat. Gritty means something containing or covered with small pieces of sand or stone.
In the text, Noah says, “He didn't dare take another peek behind him, but he knew the mudslide was about to overtake them. He felt it. He heard it.” On pages 75 and 76 of Disaster Strikes, Noah, Emma, and Alex were waiting for the onslaught, which means a powerful or violent attack or an overwhelming outpouring.
33
Emma slipped, and Noah's body fell and met the mud. The mud splattered on his face and covered his legs. The deluge or large amount of mud continued down the slope into the ocean.
Noah and Emma were safe, but where was Alex?
Remember, a deluge is a large amount of rain or water.
