Intermodalism is the use of multiple modes of transportation to move freight within standardized containers without the cargo being handled during transfers.

​To reduce time and costs during the transhipment process, standardized loading units are used in intermodal transport.

​Intermodal loading units, such as semitrailers, containers and swap bodies, are transhipped between road, rail and waterway using specialized equipment, e.g. reach stacker, grappler lift and gantry crane.
