WHAT'S A RELATIVE PRONOUN AND WHAT'S IT'S PURPOSE?

​DEFINITION

• THE OBJECTIVE OF THE RELATIVE PRONOUNS IS TO DESCRIBE NOUNS IN THE SENTENCE

• RELATIVE PRONOUNS IS THE HEAD OF THE RELATIVE CLAUSES, EACH RELATIVE CLAUSE HAS A SUBJECT AND A VERB

• THEY ARE RESPONSABLE FOR IDENTIFY AN OBJECT, A PERSON, A TIME PERIOD, ETC

• USUALLY, THE RELATIVE CLAUSES GOES AFTER THE NOUN IT'S DESCRIBING

(The who is used to refer to the pet's owner)

(Depending the sentence, the relative pronouns can make it more or less formal - Who is more formal but less common in spoken english).

- THE RELATIVE PRONOUN "THAT" CAN BE USED TO REPLACE OTHER RELATIVE PRONOUNS, DEPENDING ON THE SENTENCE.
The cashier that I went to was very nice and gave me an extra discount.
This is the situation that I expected.
I found the ring that fits best.

OBS: IN SPOKEN ENGLISH, THE RELATIVE PRONOUN "THAT" IS MORE COMMON BUT LESS FORMAL WHEN USED.

It was a beautiful hotel, whose lobby looked like a palace
(The sentence describes a thing - the beautiful hotel)

(OBS: You can use whose to describe things too, not just people - It describes a person).
