Remember our introduction

In the United States, the right to vote has changed over time. At first, only some white men could vote. Later, new laws expanded voting rights to Black Americans, women, and young people. During the Vietnam War, many 18-year-olds were old enough to be drafted as soldiers but still could not vote. In 1971, the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. Today, some people argue that the voting age should be lowered again to 16, while others think it should stay at 18. Because of these debates, people still disagree about when someone is ready to vote.
