Particles に and を

In previous lessons, you have seen the particle following a word to mark a topic, and the particle following a word to talk about things you like.

You have also seen the particle in expressions of time and destination.

In this lesson you see the particle used to mark an occasion, like breakfast. In this context, the particle is similar to the word “at” in English but comes after the word and not before.

あさごはんに (for breakfast)

You also see the particle after the words for breakfast foods. This particle has no translation in English. It is required to mark the direct object of the verb たべます. A direct object is the target of the action of a verb. In English, the direct object is not marked but usually comes after the verb. In Japanese, the object followed by the particle を usually comes before the verb.

  • たまご を たべます。 ー“I eat eggs.”
