Mechanical
Advantage
• Mechanical Advantage= the
number of times a machines
multiplies the effort or input force
• When a machine takes a small
input force and increases the
magnitude of the output force, a
mechanical advantage has been
produced
• Machines give us mechanical
advantage

Straight, slanted surface
Does not decrease amount of work needed but increases the distance.
Same work is done but over a
greater distance.
longer ramp, more MA
MA=length/height of ramp
Inclined plane
6
Count number of supporting ropes then divide the weight of load by that amount to get effort (input) force needed.
Mass=10N,
MA=2
Input force =10/2=5N
MA of movable Pulleys
