Why does 3 ÷ 1/5 = 3 × 5?
Liam’s thinking:
1 whole = 5 pieces of size 1/5
3 wholes = 15 pieces of size 1/5
So:
3÷1/5=15
Malik’s thinking:
Dividing by 1/5 means:
“How many 1/5 pieces fit into the number?”
That’s the same as multiplying by 5.
Which explanation makes more sense to you?
Draw a diagram to explain Liam’s & Malik’s thinking.
