Temperature and Thermal Equilibrium

By Stephanie Ramirez

2

media

SWBAT: explain how temperature is related to the kinetic energy of particles and describe how thermal energy moves from warmer objects to cooler objects until thermal equilibrium is reached.

IS IT FRIDAY YET???

3

What Is Kinetic Energy?

  • Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.

  • Anything that is moving has kinetic energy:

    • A rolling soccer ball

    • Sound waves

    • Heat from a flame

    • Particles inside matter (even when you can’t see them!)

4

media

BIG IDEA: Particles are always moving — even in solids.

5

Multiple Choice

1. What is kinetic energy?

1

A. Energy stored in an object

2

B. Energy caused by heat transfer

3

C. Energy of motion

4

D. Energy from light

6

What Is Temperature?

  • Temperature is NOT how hot something feels.

  • Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance.

*If particles move faster → higher temperature

*If particles move slower → lower temperature

  • Hot water → particles move faster

  • Cold water → particles move slower

8

Particles in hot substances:

  • Move faster

  • Collide more often

  • Have more kinetic energy

Temperature & Particle Motion

Particles in cool substances:

  • Move slower

  • Collide less

  • Have less kinetic energy

9

Multiple Choice

2. What does temperature measure?

1

A. The total energy in a substance

2

B. The amount of heat in an object

3

C. The average kinetic energy of particles

4

D. The size of the particles

10

Ms.Steph's Tip:

Faster particles = more kinetic energy = higher temperature

11

Hi are we still paying attention?

12

In cool water:

  • Particles move slower

  • Dye spreads slower

In warm water:

  • Particles move faster

  • Dye spreads faster

Diffusion (Why Dye Spreads Faster in Hot Water)

  • Diffusion = particles spreading out evenly.

13

That’s why the dye spreads faster at 80°C than at 20°C!

14

Multiple Choice

Why do particles move faster at higher temperatures?

1

A. They become lighter

2

B. They have more kinetic energy

3

C. Heat makes particles larger

4

D. Temperature slows particles down

15

Multiple Choice

Why does dye diffuse faster in warm water than in cold water?

1

A. Warm water has more space

2

B. Cold water blocks the dye

3

C. Particles in warm water move faster and collide more

4

D. Dye sinks faster in warm water
