Hearing Assistive Technologies:
Assistive technologies such as speech-to-text systems help children with hearing impairments. These devices translate spoken words into text making it easier for children to understand words spoken by others. Flashing light alert systems alert children with hearing issues by a flashing light rather than a loud sound.

Speech Assistive Technologies:
Devices such as speech-generating devices or speech software help children with speech communication problems. This type of assistive technology takes text children write and turns it into speech. This helps children to communicate with others through speech more easily. Other devices, such as fluency assistance devices, help children who might speak with a stutter by altering the sound of the child's voice.

Mobility and Environmental Assistive Technologies:
Children with physical disabilities may require assistive technology that helps with mobility. Devices such as wheelchairs, white canes for the visually impaired, or prosthetic limbs help children to move around independently. Other devices like ramps, remote control doors, and talking crosswalk equipment help to modify the physical environment.

This is our Assistive Technology Scenario ~ Let's Read It!

David and Cody have a 7-year-old daughter, named Peyton, who will be entering second grade soon.

Peyton has hearing issues that cause her to be partially deaf in both ears. This also impacts Peyton's ability to communicate effectively through speech.

David and Cody want to make sure that Peyton can understand her teachers and peers, as well as express herself through speech.

They are wondering what types of assistive technology they should look for that can help Peyton maintain her hearing and speech capabilities while in school.

What advice might you have for David and Cody?

One example of assistive technology that David and Cody can use request for their daughter Peyton is the use of speech to text software.

This would help Peyton socialize with her peers because she could understand what they are saying to her and others.

One example of assistive technology that David and Cody can use request for their daughter Peyton who is struggling with speech communication is text to speech software.

This would allow Peyton to write text and then it would turn her written word into spoken words, allowing her to have a 2-way conversation with others.

One piece of advice that I would give to David and Cody as they begin to set their daughter up for success in school is to have open and honest communication with all the people in Peyton's academic circle before the start of school so everyone has all the information and devices they need for her success!
