Impact on Social and Emotional Development

Parents and experts worry that too much screen time is bad for the social and emotional development of a child. Children may struggle to build social relationships and develop emotional skills if they do not regularly interact with others. A family technology plan can help schedule device-free time and limit the use of technology by children.

Privacy and Safety Concerns

Caregivers also worry about the privacy and safety of their children while using technology. Parents also worry about the digital footprint their children leave online. Caregivers can teach children about the risks of sharing personal information online as they can be accessible to others in the future.

Child Monitoring Parental Apps

Caregivers can monitor the location of their children with apps such as location trackers, geofencing, and driving monitors. Other technologies, such as motion sensors and cameras, allow caregivers to keep an eye on their children while they are close by.

Hearing Assistive Technologies: Assistive technologies such as speech-to-text systems help children with hearing impairments. These devices translate spoken words into text making it easier for children to understand words spoken by others. Flashing light alert systems alert children with hearing issues by a flashing light rather than a loud sound.

Speech Assistive Technologies: Devices such as speech-generating devices or speech software help children with speech communication problems. This type of assistive technology takes text children write and turns it into speech. This helps children to communicate with others through speech more easily. Other devices, such as fluency assistance devices, help children who might speak with a stutter by altering the sound of the child's voice.

Mobility and Environmental Assistive Technologies: Children with physical disabilities may require assistive technology that helps with mobility. Devices such as wheelchairs, white canes for the visually impaired, or prosthetic limbs help children to move around independently. Other devices like ramps, remote control doors, and talking crosswalk equipment help to modify the physical environment.
