Skimming is a reading skill where you read and look at pictures quickly to get the main idea of a text.
You can do this by:
Reading the title
Looking at photos and illustrations
Looking at key words
What is Skimming?
When to skim a text:
Before reading carefully
To decide is a text is interesting or useful
When you don't have much time

Scanning is a reading skill where you read quickly to find specific information, not the main idea.
You can do this by:
Knowing what you're looking for (date, name, number, place)
Move your eyes quickly over the text
Stop when you see the word or information
Ignore the rest of the text
What is Scanning?
When to scan a text:
To find a date, location, or name
To answer one specific question
When using timetables, menus, or websites.
