Skimming is a reading skill where you read and look at pictures quickly to get the main idea of a text.

You can do this by:

• Reading the title

• Looking at photos and illustrations

• Looking at key words

What is Skimming?

When to skim a text:

• ​Before reading carefully

• To decide is a text is interesting or useful

• When you don't have much time

Scanning is a reading skill where you read quickly to find specific information, not the main idea.

You can do this by:

• Knowing what you're looking for (date, name, number, place)

• Move your eyes quickly over the text

• Stop when you see the word or information

• Ignore the rest of the text
