Earth's Movement and Shadows

5.EES1.3:

Earth and the sun cause observable patterns:
a. day and night
b. changes in length and direction of shadows over a day

5

This was the oldest known tool for telling time. It dates back to about 3,000 years ago and was used in ancient Egypt. It used the shadows created by the sun's light. Even though it was accurate, can you think of why we used different tools to tell time?

What is this?

At anytime, half of the Earth's surface faces the Sun and it is daylight and the other half of the Earth's surface faces away from the Sun and it is darkness.

Earth's Rotation

7

media

The tilt of the Earth's axis affects the length of day. This tilt is approximately 25 degrees. If the axis were not tilted there would be 12 equal hours of daylight and darkness. Instead there is more daylight hours in the summer. There are fewer hours of day light in the winter.
