Registration plates

  • Commonly known as "number plates" or "reg plates"

  • Alphanumeric plates used to display the registration mark of a vehicle

  • Used in the UK since 1904 and compulsory for motor vehicle on public roads

  • A suffix reg plate was a style used in the UK between 1963 and July 1983

  • Suffix reg plates are split into three sections of characters

  • The first three letters show the area the car was registered

  • The next three characters are random numbers that differentiate the car from others registered in the same year and location

  • The last character is the age identifier

  • The first two letters indicate the region of the country the car was registered

  • The next two numbers show the year the car was registered

  • The last three are random letters differentiating vehicles registered in the same place in the same year

  • The letter I, J, Q, T, U and Z are not used as local identifiers

  • Although O is used for Oxford

  • Z can however be used as a random letter while Q and I are excluded

  • J, T, U can be used for personalised plates

  • Combinations that may appear offensive are also not allowed
