Summary

Today we read chapters 1 and 2.

In today's reading, you were introduced to the two narrators of the story: Nellie and Tamiko. Nellie is a young girl who lives in Bly, Oregon. Her father is posted in Alaska for the war. She is struggling with his absence, as well as the growing distance between her and her friend Joey. Joey is withdrawn because of the death of his brother during the war. At the end of Chapter 1, he sets fire to the shed of one of their neighbors.

Tamiko lives in Shinji-cho village in Japan. Tamiko's story begins approximately seven months before Nellie's. Tamiko writes to her ancestors and tells them about the hardships she faces from the war. Her brother, Kyo, is going to fight in the war, and Tamiko is scared, even though she realizes they all must make sacrifices for the benefit of their homeland.
