Why does Tom try to warn Amanda that Laura is not like the other girls and not to count on too much from her when Jim calls? 

• He knows that Laura is secretly planning to ruin the evening.
  
• He is really jealous and insecure. He doesn't want anything about their current living arrangement to change.
  
• He is feeling guilty because he knows he deliberately chose a co-worker who would not get along with Laura.
  
• He knows Amanda expects too much of both Laura and Jim; he is much more realistic and doesn't want his mother to experience too much of a disappointment.

What can be inferred about Mr. Wingfield's (Amanda's husband) character? Even though we do not see him in the play, we learn some things about him, things which reflect particularly in Tom and Amanda. 

• He was kind and sweet and unassuming. He was always trying to please others.
  
• He was a good looking charmer who drank a bit too much and followed where his instincts led him.
  
• He was a hard-driving, career-oriented man who cared little for his family. 
• He was sickly and very much an introvert.
