What is the main idea of this passage?
There is one big difference between airplanes and gliders.  Gliders look like airplanes, but have no engine.  Gliders need help to get up in the air.  Sometimes an airplane pulls a glider with a rope to give it a start.  When the glider is high enough to soar, the glider pilot lets the rope drop.  Another way to get a glider up is to tow it with a car or truck.  Because a glider has no engine the ride is quiet.  The only sound is the rush of air.  This is one of the things that makes pilots love gliders.

People love to eat sandwiches.  Sandwiches can be oozing with peanut butter and jelly.  They can be stacked high with bologna and cheese.  Some sandwiches are served hot with melted cheese and steak.  Sandwiches can come in a pita pocket, without crusts, or on whole wheat bread. Sandwiches make tasty meals.

What is the main idea of the passage?
Many people enjoy having pets.  Pets must have fresh food and water every day.  Their bedding must be kept clean.  Sometimes pets need to be bathed.  You should make sure that your pet gets exercise every day.  When a pet is sick, it is important to take it to the veterinarian.  Pets need to be loved.  Although owning a pet is a big responsibility, pets are a lot of fun. 

• Pets need to have exercise to stay healthy.
• If you don't feed your pet it might get sick and need to go to the veterinarian.
• There are a lot of things you have to do to take care of a pet.
• Taking care of a pet is hard work, but it's worth it.
