Parts of the sewing machine

Spool pin

• Where spool of thread is placed for threading
• Where the bobbin in wound
• Where the spool is stored when not sewing
• Where the bobbin is stored when not sewing

Presser foot

• The pedal you press down to make the machine run
• Holds the fabric against the feed dogs
• Keeps the needle in place
• Acts as a thread guide

Stitch plate

• Where you place stitches to remove them
• Allows you to change the width of a stitch
• Allows you to change length of stitch
• Shows measures for various seam widths

Thread guide

• The book that shows you how to thread the machine
• The slit in the spool for holding the thread when not sewing
• Series of channels for the thread which helps with direction and tension
• The opening in the stitch plate that the upper and lower thread goes through

Screen

• Shows settings of the machine including selected stitch, presser foot, stitch width, stitch length etc.
• Used to sort different button sizes
• The place where stitches are selected for sewing
• Under the throat plate to catch lint and keep the machine clean

Reverse button

• Used to remove stitches
• Used to change stitch width and length
• Changes direction of the feed dogs
• Used to undo a stitch selection

Needle stop

• Determines where the needle is in relation to center
• Prevents the needle from moving up/down through the fabric
• Guard to prevent the needle from sewing through your finger
• Determines if the needle is in or out of fabric when you stop sewing

Stitch selection buttons

• Determines width of stitch
• Determines length of stitch
• Determine which stitch will be sewn
• Determines the size of stitch

Direction the thread comes off the bobbin 

• Clockwise
• Counter clockwise

Direction hand wheel is turned

• Towards you
• Away from you
