Emergency Planning

Principals shall prepare annually?

• a)  A Crisis Response Plan (the Plan) for their school (b)  Emergency Response and Procedures for: (i) Fire (ii) Lockdown, Secure School and Shelter in Place (iii) Evacuation Location(s) (iv) Emergency evacuation procedures (v) Communication plans and team leaders (responsibilities) (vi) Crisis Response Kit location, inclusions and responsibility. (vii) Any other emergency protocol deemed required by the principal (c) Post copies of the plan in the school and provide a copy to each employee and members of the school parent council (d) Provide a copy of the Plan to their Superintendent of Schools before September 30th of each school year.  (ref: p.6 Emergency document OCSB)

• First aid kit, schedules of students and teachers, whistle, master keys, disco lights, location to go if evacuation is needed, emergency phone numbers for students, lockdown procedures, fire drill procedures, cell phone/walkie talkies/ megaphone, Crisis Intervention Summer vacation plans and phone numbers, map of school, alpha list of students

How does one know their responsibilities in an emergency situation?

• They call the principal who then tells them.
• They use their best judgement for the safety of all students.
• Their responsibilities is clearly communicated to them by the principal and included in the emergency protocol booklet.

What is the custodian's responsibility before a fire drill?

• Call the police to advise of the drill.
• Call the fire department to advise of the drill.
• Call the superintendent to advise of the drill.

How many fire drills are required and when?

• 4 fire drills, 2 in Sept. and 2 in June
• 6 fire drills, 4 in Sept-Dec and 2 in Jan.-June
• 6 fire drills, 3 in Sept-Dec and 3 in Jan-June

When should all emergency plans be submitted to the board?

• August 30th of every year
• September 15th of every year
• September 30th of every year

How many alternate evacuation locations should there be in the plan?

• minimum 1
• minimum 2
• minimum 3

What are other emergencies requiring a response?

• Earthquake, dog loose on the yard, extreme temperatures
• gas leak, roof collapsing, no heat in the winter, no drinking water
• power outage, bomb threat, flood
• all of the above
