Informative Writing Terms

After giving a piece of evidence, authors will do this to show why it’s relevant or how it supports the claim.

• Evidence
• Elaboration
• Information
• Infer

This leaves the reader with closure. It may connect back to the hook, or give a call to action, or give one last anecdote.

• Implication

• Attributive Tag
• Conclusion

This is another name for "commentary" or "elaboration" in an essay.

This is writing that is meant to persuade the audience, to influence the audience’s opinions

This is non-fiction writing meant to explain, describe, or educate.

This is writing meant to entertain. It's primarily story-telling.

This states the main ideas of a text. It is shorter than the original text. 

• Summary
• Paraphrase
• Direct Quote

This is where you state the  source of a quoted piece of text - the author, etc.

• Attributive tag
• Citation
• Quotation marks

This is a short phrase that introduces a quote or someone else’s ideas. It names the speaker/writer: “According to Dr. Seuss…”

• Gift tag

This gets the reader’s attention, with quotations, metaphors, stories, surprising statistics, etc.
