In “Signs of Hope” in Promises to Keep, Sharon Robinson describes the fight against segregation in the United States after the Civil War. When Jackie was growing up, African Americans were fighting segregation across the country.During this time, Jackie Robinson was inspired by his family, particularly in their values and in sports.There were many people fighting segregation in the United States, many of whom Jackie looked up to.
When Jackie was growing up, African Americans were fighting segregation across the country. People were fighting for educational and economic equity, waging “battles in courts, newspapers, and at street demonstrations” (pg. 13). Newspapers told stories about racial progress and encouraged the antisegregation movement. Many African American writers, artists, musicians, and activists rose to fame and popularity during this time because of their work against segregation. 
 In the 1930s, African American athletes won competitions against white athletes, which many people saw as a victory over racism. Jackie’s mother fought against segregation, too. Even though blacks lived in only certain parts of Pasadena, Jackie’s mother bought a house in an all-white neighborhood.
His older brothers were a big influence on him. In the 1936 Olympics, his brother Mack won gold and silver medals for track and field, which some called a win for humanity. There were many people fighting segregation in the United States, many of whom Jackie looked up to.
