• In “Signs of Hope” in Promises to Keep, Sharon Robinson describes the fight against segregation in the United States after the Civil War. When Jackie was growing up, African Americans were fighting segregation across the country.During this time, Jackie Robinson was inspired by his family, particularly in their values and in sports.There were many people fighting segregation in the United States, many of whom Jackie looked up to.

People were fighting for educational and economic equity, waging “battles in courts, newspapers, and at street demonstrations” (pg. 13). Newspapers told stories about racial progress and encouraged the antisegregation movement.
