How and why did Richard kill the kitten?

• He was playing with it and got loose and almost got hit by a car. He killed it by mistake when he grabbed it, not knowing his strength.
• Richard hates his father and since his father told him to kill the cat richards excuse was that he just followed orders so he wouldn't get punished and his dad knows that richard will never take him seriously again if he is punished and Richard hangs the cat.
