What was the Fugitive Slave Act ?

• A law that freed the slaves.

• A law that made it a crime to help run away slaves and allowed for the arrest of run away slaves in free states.

• A law where if a run away slave made it to a free state that meant they were free.

• A law that expanded the slave trade to northern states.

What issue arose with the Fugitive Slave Law ?

• Slave catchers were unable to find escaped slaves because of this law.

• Slave catchers could get others to say a free black person was a slave and therefore was able to drag them to the south to be slave.

• People began to like slavery in the north.

• Slaves were being set free in the South.

Why is Uncle Tom's Cabin such an important book for this time period.

• It helped humanism slaves, so that more people were willing to fight against the evils of slavery.

• It made the argument for slavery sound more appealing.

• It got more people to see slaves as people who were inferior and needed white people to take care of them.

• It helped spread the idea that black people should act more like white people if they want to be free.
