Open,Closed or Isolated Systems part 1

A system can be defined as

• A collection of parts that work together to complete a purpose
• A system
• A piece of a whole
• A group that individually does work

This type of system does not interact with the world around it. It does all the work by itself

• Closed System
• Open System

This type of system requires interaction with the environment around it

• Closed System

• Open System

Example(s) of an open system is/are:

• a human body that is alive and functioning

• a computer

• a coffee machine

• all of the above

What is an isolated system?

• A system that does not interact with its surroundings; its total energy and mass stay constant.

• A system that does not interact with its surrounding, mass stays the same but energy is lost.

• A system in which mass or energy can be lost to or gained from the environment

An isolated energy system is 100% effecient. No energy or matter is transferred between the system and its environment. An example would be

• a boiling pot with the cover off

• an insulated thermos w a hot liquid inside

• a boiling pot with the cover on

An example of an open system would be:

• the water cycle

• the ocean

• the universe
