All organisms need energy to survive.  How do scavengers and decomposers get the energy they need?

• Scavengers break their food down into chemical nutrients, and decomposers take their energy from those chemicals.
• Scavengers make their own food.  Decomposers eat some nutrients that scavengers produce.  Decomposers then return chemical nutrients to the soil.
• When scavengers kill and eat animals, decomposers eat some of the food they leave behind.  The decomposers then return chemical nutrients to the soil.
• Scavengers feed on dead animals or plants. The food the scavengers leave behind is broken down by decomposers into chemical nutrients and returned to the soil.
