The green sea turtle and the loggerhead sea turtle nest along the Atlantic and the Pacific shores in the United States. The green sea turtle is on the endangered list while the loggerhead is listed as threatened. The green sea turtle eats grass, algae and other vegetation and is classified as herbivorous. Unlike the green sea turtle, the loggerhead turtle is classified as carnivorous, and eats horseshoe crabs, clams, and mussels. Both sea turtles live in temperate and subtropical waters and tend to stay near the coastline.

The most common sea turtle in U. S. coastal waters, the loggerhead sea turtle was listed as threatened throughout its range on July 28, 1978, under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and has received federal protection since that time. Loggerhead sea turtles are protected by various international treaties and agreements as well as national laws such as the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). In 2008 NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) updated the recovery plan for the loggerhead turtle.
